Herman was pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Social Work at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. His wife, Isabel was a nurse in the public hospital. They were married on February 14, 2008 and decided to spend their honeymoon in Cuba. It was a long trip from Australia to Cuba.

One of the first sites they visited was the famous Plaza de la Revolución. A nearby tour guide informed his group of the importance of the square as the historic venue where former President Fidel Castro addressed thousands of Cubans. Thousands of Cubans would assemble at the venue on special days such as May 1 and July 26.

Some of the female tourists had their hair braided. Herman took his digital camera from the backpack and began taking pictures of the government buildings, President Raul Castro’s office and the National Library in the square. He was glad that someone had invented a camera that did not need too many adjustments. The camera was a wedding gift from his uncle. His last camera was a reliable Nikon. Isabel motioned him to take a picture of the huge image of Ché Guevara. Two guards on the balcony of a nearby building watched the couple. Under Guevara’s image was the slogan—‘Hasta la Victoria Siempre.’ The nearby tour guide translated it as—Forever Onwards Towards Victory. On a nearby wall there was a large painting of Fidel Castro dressed in his army uniform.
